The Care Act 2014 introduced a duty to promote well being when carrying out any and all care and support functions in respect of a person. This is sometimes referred to as “the well being principle” because it is a guiding principle that puts well being at the heart of care and support.
The wellbeing principle applies in all cases where carrying out any care and support function, or making a decision, or safeguarding. It applies equally to adults with care and support needs and their carers.
“Well being” is a broad concept, but it is described in the Care Act as relating to the following areas in particular:
No one area of well being is seen as more important than another under law and the person’s individual circumstances will determine which they deem to be most important to them, and most impacted by their eligible needs.
